MGRI student wins the UNESCO conference-competition «Actual problems of subsurface use»

On April 14-16, the All-Russian conference-competition «Actual problems of subsurface use» for students and postgraduates was held at St. Petersburg Mining University under the auspices of UNESCO. Vitaly Kazaku, a 4th-year student of the Faculty of Engineering, Prospecting and Mining and an activist of the MGRI SPE Student Chapter, became the winner in the nomination «Promising technical and technological solutions in the field of well construction».

The project is devoted to the development of a computer module that calculates pulsating flushing in horizontal wells. The introduction of the visual module into the existing solutions of the companies will allow young specialists to understand where the risks of accidents may occur during drilling, and to be most attentive in the relevant areas. The project also presents the pulsating flushing method, which was not previously used, but thanks to the computer model its effectiveness was demonstrated in horizontal wells, which are now a trend in the oil and gas industry.

Vitaly says that participation in such serious conferences for him is primarily a challenge to himself. “In addition, you need to understand: to get a dream job, you need to be different from other candidates, be able to present yourself and your material, and such conferences give this experience. They also allow you to expand your horizons, be up to date with all scientific trends and, of course, meet like-minded people and specialists from leading oil and gas companies, exchange contacts and get a job via these acquaintances in the future”, the student adds.

As the winner of the All-Russian stage, Vitaly Kazaku will represent the country at the final, international stage of the conference «Actual problems of subsurface use» which will be held from May 19 to 21. The delegates from more than a hundred universities from all over the world will take part in it: from Austria, Great Britain, Germany, China, Poland, France and other countries.

Vitaly has been developing his project for a long time, and this victory is not the only one. In August last year, the student won a grant under the program «Digital Oil and Gas» from the Foundation and Innovation Promotion.

At the conference in St. Petersburg, MGRI was represented by 11 other students – Arseny Chekalov, Sergey Nesterenko, Leyli Kalendarova, Tatiana Budina, Ekaterina Vorotnikova, Yegor Gaponenko, Lev Kononenko, Rustam Mammadov, Anton Markin, Maya Morozova and Daria Urusova. Ksenia Shcherbakova and Batyr Ovezov, teachers of the Department of Modern Drilling Technologies, also presented their projects.

The All-Russian conference-competition of students and postgraduates has been held at St. Petersburg Mining University since 2003. Thanks to the relevant topics and the high level of scientific reports, the conference has established itself as an authoritative and popular discussion platform for presentations of the scientific vision of the development of the mineral and fuel and energy complexes of Russia. The conference was recognized both among Russian technical universities and among specialists of specialized companies engaged in scientific research in the field of subsurface use.
