Applied Geology

A geologist is concerned with the study of processes taking place in the upper crust and conducts a whole range of field studies and laboratory research in order to perform various tasks in the field of applied hydrogeology and engineering geology. This specialization implies the ability to conduct hydrogeological, geocryological and engineering geology-related research in order to prepare construction rationales, create ground water- and exogenous geological processes monitoring systems, perform diagnostics of complex construction objects of any kind as well as manage them and make forecasts about their operation at any given stage. The graduates’ professional field of activity is connected with the Earth’s crust, lithosphere, rocks, ground water, mineral resources, natural and anthropogenic geological processes, geochemical and geophysical fields, geological functions of the lithosphere and others.

Students of hydrogeology and engineering geology study a wide range of specialized subjects which are not confined only to hydrogeology and engineering geology, but also belong to associated disciplines. This enables our graduates to successfully conduct geological engineering surveys for construction projects, do hydrogeological research, conduct groundwater exploration and the assessment of groundwater reserves in permafrost. A large part in the acquisition of theoretical knowledge is played by seminars and workshops in general hydrogeology, classes on physical and mechanical properties of soils, engineering geology, geocryology and others. The students practice at the training ground in Moscow region and in organizations and scientific institutions connected with soil research and the conduction of geological engineering surveys.

Highly-qualified specialists in hydrogeology and engineering geology are in high demand in Russia and worldwide. Our graduates work in geological expeditions, scientific centers, as well as apply their professional knowledge in companies like Mosgorgeotrest State Budgetary Enterprise, Mosoblgeotrest State Enterprise, Gidrospetsgeologiya Federal State Unitary Geological Enterprise, GIDEK CJSC, Institute of the Earth’s Cryosphere of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gidroproekt OJSC, Fundamentproject OJSC.
