Ecology and Environment Management

The profession of ecologist is a relatively new one. The understanding that natural resources are not inexhaustible came to humanity only 40 years ago. Hence arose the necessity to have specialists who would be able to prevent the air, water and soil pollution with the use of proper scientific methods. Today, ecology has become a most important domain which many things, including forecasting natural and preventing anthropogenic catastrophes, depends upon. Ecologists deal with a whole range of issues connected with the protection of the environment and regional natural resources management.

They prepare ecological rationality accounts and ecological expertise, develop the ecologic law, evaluate the condition of natural resources, perform ecological monitoring and study urban ecology. Among other things ecologists study geochemistry, evaluate the impact of human activity on the environment, conduct ecological marketing, management and audit, make evaluations of the resources’ economic potential and of the losses arising from the damage done to the environment. Ecologists also deal with the issues of natural resources management as well as engage in instruction in ecology.

Students of ecology study a wide range of natural sciences and specialized subjects, such as environmental monitoring, environmental geology, ecological auditing, natural resource economics, environmental impact assessment and many others. Laboratory work and practical training are an important part of studies. There the students acquire the skills of working with the field and laboratory equipment, compile geological and ecological maps, as well as familiarize themselves with various methods of ecological research and practical studies, which take place at the training grounds near Moscow and in the Crimea and in various industrial, scientific and project organizations.

An ecologist can work in industrial institutions, private companies and state corporations, as well as pursue a career in science or education. Many organizations and enterprises (such as the Hydroproject Institute JSC, Hydrospecial Geology Federal State Unitary Enterprise, Georesurs NPO, the Mosgorgeotrest Moscow Geological Trust, the Institute for Water and Environmental Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Geoecology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Geopolis CJSC, NOEKS NPO, the Industrial and Scientific Institute for Civil Engineering and others) which are connected with the ecology and the protection of the environment offer our graduates captivating and prestigious jobs with an opportunity of career growth.
