Business economics is a popular specialization today, and specialists in business economics are in high demand. At many universities the curriculum of the economics programs is usually shaped by the specialization of the institution and, with Sergo Ordzhonikidze Russian State University for Geological Prospecting, it is also the case. The business economics course in MGRI is strongly mining oriented. The course encompasses economic assessment of mineral deposits and geological prospecting. Economists who choose this specialization are mainly occupied with the assessment of economic risks for the enterprises in the raw materials sector. They create business plans and business projects, analyze the work of geological prospecting organizations and deal with various issues of economic growth of mining enterprises and their development. 

In the course of their studies students acquire fundamental knowledge in economics, finance, the legal framework for the development of mineral resources, mathematics, accounting and audit, but the subjects relating to the mining specialization are paid special attention to and they include general geology and mining basics, the development of deposits, the technologies for mineral processing and others. Students master the most modern technologies of data collection and analysis which enable them to conduct economic evaluation and later analyze and interpret the results. The students also learn how to compile the economic sections of mineral deposit assessments. The course includes both academic and production practice, which are aimed at giving the students the opportunity to prepare themselves for professional activity in the economic circumstances of modern Russia.
