MGRI gem cutters received silver medals at the "Heritage and Traditions" competition
On February 14, the winners of the "Heritage and Traditions" gem cutting contest, including two MGRI students, were awarded at the 1st art and industrial exhibition-forum "Unique Russia" in Moscow.
Silver medals were awarded to Sergo Ordzhonikidze Russian State University for Geological Prospecting students: Irina Tupikova, a 4th-year student of the geological prospecting faculty, and Maxim Yanin, a 2nd-year master's student of the same faculty. Irina received the award in the category "Novice gem сutter", and Maxim – in the category "Master gem cutter". The students worked under the guidance of the acting head of the department of mineralogy and gemology, Associate Professor Dmitry Petrochenkov. He was awarded the diploma for his contribution to the development of Russian gem cutting.
The "Heritage and Traditions" gem cutter competition was announced in July last year. It was organized by the Foundation for the Promotion of Russian Gem Cutting, established in May 2020.
The competition program includes two levels of difficulty: "Beginner gem cutter" (73 faces) and "Master gem cutter" (129 faces). 10 gem cutters took part in the competition. The cut stones were evaluated by the quality of processing by the State Precious Metals and Gems Repository experts.
